Description

Nitinol Sputtering Target is a nickel-titanium source target used to deposit Ni-Ti thin films. It gives coating developers a controlled bulk alloy source for research and production work involving functional coatings and other deposited layers where nickel-to-titanium balance is central to the program. The target may be supplied as a planar disc, a drawing-based shape, or part of a bonded assembly, depending on the cathode and cooling arrangement.

The target and the deposited film are related but not identical products. Target chemistry, impurity reporting, working-face condition, and physical construction can be inspected before installation. Film composition and shape-memory response emerge only after interaction with chamber condition, gas pressure, power, substrate position, layer thickness, and subsequent thermal treatment. For that reason, a productive purchase connects two documents: a target drawing that fits the source hardware and a film-development plan that measures the result on representative coupons. This separation lets procurement define a repeatable source component without placing untestable functional claims on the bulk target.

Write the Ni-Ti Ratio Without Ambiguity

Nitinol is not one fixed chemistry for every film study. State the required nickel-to-titanium ratio and identify whether percentages are atomic or mass based. Those expressions describe different numerical values and cannot be left implicit. A development program may also identify specific impurities for reporting, but each requested element should have a defined reason, method, and acceptance basis rather than becoming a broad purity slogan.

Bulk analysis represents the sampled target material. It provides a valuable lot baseline and supports repeat purchasing, yet it cannot predict the composition at every substrate location. Preferential transfer, chamber history, source erosion, and process settings may shift the film result. Keep target composition records linked to the run log so deviations can be investigated against both material and deposition variables.

Fit the Cathode Before Planning the Film

Diameter and thickness alone rarely capture the installation. The drawing can identify the plasma-facing area, rear contact, edge break, mounting holes, clamped region, central opening, and any surface excluded from erosion. When a cathode model is named, compare the actual hardware with the drawing; used equipment may contain modified clamps or cooling components that no longer match the original configuration.

Unbonded targets depend on consistent mechanical contact and an approved clamping arrangement. Bonded targets add the backing material, backing thickness, joining method if prescribed, target-to-backing alignment, and acceptance of the joined interface. A buyer-owned backing plate needs inspection after the previous material is removed. Its reuse cannot be assumed until geometry and surface condition have been assessed.

Bonding Scope Changes Both Cost and Acceptance

A quotation for a bare Nitinol target cannot be compared directly with a quotation for a bonded source assembly. List every included item: alloy target, new or reused backing, bond work, backing preparation, dimensional report, interface examination, and return handling. If bond coverage is to be assessed, name the method, viewing side, report format, and acceptance rule. Vague requests for a perfect bond do not create an inspectable release condition.

Cooling performance belongs to the installed cathode and operating recipe. The supplied assembly can be checked against its drawing and agreed bond evidence, while the equipment team verifies contact, coolant operation, mounting force, and usable power history. This division becomes more important as target area, deposition duration, or power duty changes from a small laboratory trial.

Design the Coupon Program Around One Question at a Time

An initial run may investigate whether the chamber deposits stably, whether the film composition reaches the desired region, whether adhesion survives a later step, or whether thermal treatment creates a useful transformation response. Trying to prove all outcomes with one coupon obscures the result. Choose the substrate, position, film thickness basis, measurement method, and success criterion for the first question, then retain the actual recipe with the target lot.

Heat treatment is particularly significant for functional Ni-Ti films. Record fixture, atmosphere, thermal profile, and the condition in which the film is measured. As-deposited and heat-treated material are different evaluation states. When a program moves from flat coupons to patterned devices, geometry and substrate constraint may change the observed behavior again.

For wire-based superelastic or shape-memory development rather than deposited layers, Nitinol Wire is the appropriate starting form. Thin solid stock can be compared through Nitinol Foil. A program seeking elemental titanium deposition should instead review the Titanium Sputtering Target; matching hardware dimensions do not make its source chemistry equivalent to Ni-Ti.

Receive a Chamber-Ready Component

Receiving checks can cover identification, finished geometry, working-face condition, backing configuration, and the records named in the order. The target face should arrive protected from abrasion, fingerprints, and loose fibers. Edge support needs to prevent transport loads from concentrating on a corner or bond line, while packaging labels should preserve the relationship among target lot, backing identity, and drawing revision.

Clean-area unpacking constraints need to be stated before packing is chosen. The same applies to permitted cleaning after receipt. An attractive surface photograph is not evidence of compatibility with a particular chamber procedure; the accepted surface description and handling route provide the useful connection.

Questions for a Nitinol Target Program

Will the deposited film have the same Ni-Ti ratio as the target?

Not necessarily. Bulk target chemistry is the starting source condition, while film composition also reflects equipment, gas, power, target history, substrate location, and measurement method. Coupon analysis on the intended process establishes the observed transfer.

When is a bonded target preferable to a bare target?

The cathode design, target geometry, thermal contact, and operating duty determine the assembly concept. Where bonding is specified, the backing material and bond acceptance must be included; otherwise a bare target may suit an approved clamped arrangement.

Can transformation temperature be accepted from the target certificate?

A bulk-target certificate does not establish the transformation response of a deposited and thermally treated film. That property is evaluated on a defined film specimen after the relevant deposition and post-process sequence.

What information is needed when reusing an existing backing plate?

Identify ownership, material, drawing, removal and cleaning scope, available service history, and criteria for accepting the exposed backing. Also define what happens commercially if the recovered part is unsuitable for another bond.

Assemble the Target Purchase Package

State Nitinol Sputtering Target, the Ni-Ti composition with its calculation basis, critical impurity controls, quantity, and current target drawing. Include cathode reference, bare or backed construction, backing ownership, bonding scope, working-face requirement, dimensional inspection, bond evidence, identification, cleaning and packaging constraints, and destination. A short note describing substrate, deposition method, and the film question being studied helps expose mismatched assumptions. Film chemistry, adhesion, transformation, and device behavior remain measured outputs of the qualification route, giving the order a clear and realistic boundary.
