Titanium Flange is a machined connection component for piping, vessels, heat exchangers, and process equipment where titanium's low density and corrosion behavior fit the selected service. It brings a pipe or nozzle into a bolted joint through a defined bore, sealing face, bolt pattern, thickness, hub, and connection end. Standard patterns support familiar piping layouts, while custom flanges solve proprietary equipment envelopes, unusual transitions, and drawing-specific orientations.

The flange works as part of a joint rather than as an isolated ring. Its face meets a gasket or mating surface; drilling meets the bolts; the bore meets the flow passage; the hub or back face meets attached equipment. These interfaces determine the purchase. A nominal size alone cannot describe them, and a visually similar flange may not assemble correctly. Start with the approved titanium grade and the released connection geometry, then choose whether delivery covers a machining blank, finished loose flange, weld-neck form, backing arrangement, or completed spool. The sealing face, bore, outside envelope, bolt circle, hole orientation, thickness, and hub cannot be selected independently. Changing one feature may alter gasket support, bolting access, internal alignment, or the transition to pipe. A complete dimensional designation can be used for a recognized pattern; a custom component needs a drawing with datums and the mating-item reference.

For replacement work, use original equipment records where possible. A field sample can reveal access and current fit, but corrosion, distortion, previous rework, or an obsolete revision may have changed its geometry. The Sealing Face Deserves Its Own Release

A sealing face is functional geometry, not simply a polished side. Identify the face style and gasket arrangement, then define the relevant contact width, surface preparation, flatness, and relationship to the bore. Some gasket systems rely on a controlled texture, so a request for the smoothest possible finish may move the surface away from the joint design.

Handling controls continue after inspection. A rigid cover can protect the face from impact and abrasion without rubbing the contact zone. Titanium grade is selected from the actual process exposure and mechanical design. Pressure, external piping reactions, thermal movement, bolt load, and the hub or weld transition shape the structural side. The component drawing and project design basis need to address both.

A custom flange does not acquire a standard pressure capability because its diameter resembles a catalog pattern. Changes to thickness, face, drilling, bore, hub, or material can change the design basis. The project authority establishes the rating or code treatment for the released geometry; production then follows that released component definition.

Loose Component or Fabricated Connection

A rough blank leaves final features and surface controls with the customer's machine shop. A finished flange includes the released machining but no attached line unless stated. A flanged spool moves fit-up, welding, orientation, and assembly examination into the order. The commercial scope should say which condition reaches the receiving dock.

Weld-End Geometry Connects Two Product Forms

For a weld-neck or prepared attachment, show the adjoining pipe outside diameter, wall, bore, taper, bevel, root region, and transition length. Small mismatches can disturb internal flow or leave poor alignment at fit-up. The mating pipe grade and condition are part of that review, along with the intended joining and shielding route.

When delivery ends at a loose flange, the assembling shop controls final cleaning, joint preparation, consumables where used, purge, welding, and post-weld examination. When assembly is included, those activities need to appear in the quotation and production record. This distinction keeps a well-machined flange from being credited with, or blamed for, work performed after it leaves the component stage.

Receiving Checks Should Recreate the Mating Test

Inspection is most useful when it follows the way the flange will assemble. Confirm material and piece identity, then evaluate the sealing face, bore, drilling, orientation, thickness, external clearances, and connection end against the released drawing. A mating template or controlled counterpart can support first-piece review, especially for a custom bolt pattern or proprietary face.

Marking belongs away from gasket contact, weld preparation, and highly loaded transitions. Package labels can carry part number, revision, grade, lot, size, and quantity. Heavy pieces need restraint that prevents movement inside the case; light surface wrapping alone will not stop one flange from striking another during handling.

Can a flange be ordered from nominal pipe size alone?

No. Add the dimensional pattern or custom drawing, grade, face, bore, drilling orientation, connection end, mating details, and delivery form.

What differentiates a custom flange from a standard pattern?

A standard component follows a named dimensional basis. A custom flange follows the released model and drawing, including its own datums, tolerances, rating basis, and interfaces.

Why is bolt-hole orientation important?

Equipment nozzles, instruments, and restricted tool access may require the pattern to sit at a specific angle. Mark a rotational datum so machining and installation use the same reference.

Should a sealing face always be highly polished?

No. The finish needs to suit the selected gasket system and face design. State the approved surface basis instead of asking for maximum smoothness.

When does pressure testing belong in the purchase?

It belongs when the supplied assembly creates a defined test boundary and the order identifies the test procedure. A loose flange cannot prove the tightness of a future piping joint.
